This is a show poster and animation for the multi-genre artist, producer and DJ James Blake, inspired by the album art from his most recent album “Friends That Break Your Heart.” This graphic would have been the official show poster for the Boston stop along his “Friends That Break Your Heart” tour, and the animation would be for social media promotion.

Process
When beginning this project, I knew that I wanted to use the music, the feeling, and the current tour visuals as inspiration. In doing research and creating a mood board, I pulled ideas from other previous tours, album art, as well as other art and posters that felt along a similar vein. A selection of these inspirational images are shown here.
As an artist, James Blake is thoughtful, experimental, and genre-mixing. His sound can be bold, bass heavy, and rhythm focused or ambient, soft, and stripped down. Often, these sounds are mixed within the same song or the same project, but regardless, there is always a feeling of depth, abstraction, and artfulness to his music and visuals.
Styling and Design
I ultimately landed on the third sketch, as I wanted this poster to be appropriate to use for his current tour, taking visual inspiration from his album art and reinterpreting it in a graphically illustrative style.
